The curriculum follows the standard dental hygiene
process of care. The program will prepare the students to assume a position
as a dental hygienist capable of providing preventive and therapeutic dental
hygiene services using this process.The
program provides academic studies, clinical dexterity skill development and
field placement necessary to achieve and maintain optimum oral health for
clients/patients in a sound professional manner.
All procedures performed for the client are based
on an individual needs and the client/patient is perceived as a
partner-in-care.
The student evaluates the care that is provided to
the client/patient by determining short versus long-term goals and
implementing techniques for continued care.
Academic Studies will enable the students to use a
systematic approach implementing the most current standards and ethical
principals.
The program will offer the students topics
regarding business practices related to employment and self-employment
issues.
Dental Hygiene students demonstrate their learning
and performance achievements on mannequins and later on clients in the
school dental clinic.
Students will have an opportunity to demonstrate
the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary to be effective care
providers in a variety of Community field placements.
The dental hygiene program offered at The Vancouver
College of Dental Hygiene includes at minimum, similar course hours and
basic fundamentals offered by comparable programs in British Columbia
Community Colleges.
