November 2010 & April 2011 Dental Hygiene Programs.


Admission Requirements

The Vancouver College of Dental Hygiene Inc. (VCDH) is part of Canada’s largest private educational facility and is dedicated to the highest standards of dental hygiene education.

Program seats are limited due to the large number of applicants. Therefore, not all applicants are guaranteed acceptance.

Applicants  must write a mandatory admission test which includes:
  • English Comprehension
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Spatial Relations
  • General Aptitude

Admission test processing fee is $150.00
(non-refundable).

Applicants Educated in Canada

Candidates educated in British Columbia must have completed a minimum of 30 first-year university credits or an equivalent to the following subjects. Applicants from other provinces also require the equivalent transferable credits which include:


  • Chemistry including lab (6 credits)
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology including lab
    (6 credits)
  • Psychology (6 credits)
  • English (6 credits)
  • Statistics  (3 credits)
  • Elective Courses (3 credits)

Applicants Educated Outside Canada

Candidates who have graduated from a post-secondary institution in a foreign country are required to have their diplomas evaluated on a course-by-course basis by International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES) to determine if their education and courses taken are equivalent to the above requirements.

ICES must provide a supplemental evaluation and comprehensive report for our evaluation

The applicants are responsible to pay all applicable ICES fees.

Applicants must arrange to have copies of the evaluation forwarded directly to VCDH from ICES by the required deadline.

The dental hygiene program is taught in English. Candidates must have a fluent understanding of English as no special consideration will be given to students who have difficulty communicating in English.

English proficiency - English is the language in which the dental hygiene program is taught at VCDH. 


It is imperative that the student has a strong grasp of the English language, both verbal and written in order to complete the dental hygiene program.


The National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination is offered in both English and French. A graduate must write the National Dental Hygiene Board Examination prior to registering with the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia.


Selection Process

If the dental hygiene program is oversubscribed; preference will be given to applicants according to the following priorities:

  • Permanent residents of British Columbia
  • Permanent residents of other provinces and territories in Canada

  • Applicants from other countries

A comprehensive selection process will be used and admission will be granted to those candidates that rank highest in the selection process.


Successful applicants will be selected for one of the 52 available seats and/or one of the places on the waiting list, based on the following criteria:

  1. Academic performance in their pre-requisite first year  university transfer courses.
  2. Mandatory pre-admission Test Results
  3. Mandatory pre-admission screening
  4. Other factors deemed relevant by the Dean and Admissions Committee

  5. Note: Preference will be given to candidates that have taken a dental assisting program and have practical experience in a dental-office environment. Candidates will be notified by VCDH if they have been selected for an interview. Only candidates offered an interview will be considered for admission. After the interview the candidates will be notified as to one of the three status options mentioned below:

    • Conditionally accepted status
    • Waiting list status
    • Not accepted status

    Final acceptance is dependant on the candidate providing proof of the requirements below .It is suggested, although not required, that the applicants have these documents submitted along with the initial application.

    • Proof of immunization status for Hepatitis B & physician's interpretation of results
    • Results of mandatory TB testing & physician's interpretation of results
    • A completed Medical Health Form
    • A current clear criminal record check (CPIC) *
    • Proof of current First Aid Certification and current C.P.R. certification **


    * Registration with the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia (CDHBC) is mandatory to practise as a dental hygienist in British Columbia. 
    A history of criminal offences or charges of professional misconduct in another jurisdiction or another profession may interfere with your ability to become registered in British Columbia.  It is strongly recommended that clarification be sought with the CDHBC before applying to this dental hygiene program should either situation apply to you.
    ** Basic Rescuer in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). First Aid certification and CPR certification must be kept current at all times while a student is registered at VCDH.

    Applicants who do not meet published deadlines for submission of all required documents may have their conditional acceptance withdrawn.
